Required Training for Wisconsin School Staff

Training Requirements

The following trainings are required in state or federal law for some or all school staff. Specific requirements are described below. This is not an exhaustive list of all required trainings that school districts need to implement (for example, there are training requirements related to the McKinney Vento Homeless Assistance Act and Title IX of the Education Amendments of 1972). School district leaders should review local, state, and federal statute and grant requirements that pertain to their employees. School districts may also set additional required training for employees based on local needs.

For the Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect, Mandatory Reporting of Threats of School Violence, and Bloodborne Pathogens trainings:

BEFORE YOU BEGIN
1. Make sure you know where to send your confirmation email (for example, to a supervisor, a principal, or human resources in your district.) Your school should provide instructions for where to send this email.
2. Keep a copy of your confirmation email as proof of training completion. If you transfer to a different school district within 5 years of taking the training, this email will serve as your proof of completion.
3. DPI is not responsible for keeping or maintaining records of course completion. This responsibility lies with the school district. Do not send your confirmation email to DPI.
4. It may take 10-14 business days to receive your confirmation email.

IMPORTANT NOTE
Due to the high volume of users taking this course, it may take 10-14 business days to receive your confirmation email. If you do not receive a confirmation email within 10-14 business days, please do the following:
   - Check spam/junk email folders.
   - Ensure all email addresses are spelled correctly.
   - Separate multiple email addresses with commas (not spaces, periods, or semicolons.)
   - Retake the training and submit the form again.

Mandatory Reporting of Child Abuse and Neglect. Required of every school employee. Training frequency: within the first six months of employment, then every five years. Statutory Authority: Wis. Stat. sec. 118.07(5).

Mandatory Reporting of Threats of School Violence (Act 143). Required of every school employee. Training frequency: within the first six months of employment, then every five years. Statutory Authority: Wis. Stat. sec. 118.07(5).

Bloodborne Pathogens. An educational program on bloodborne pathogen training is required of all school employees that can reasonably be anticipated to be exposed to blood. Training frequency: upon initial assignment, then annually. Statutory Authority: O.S.H.A. regulation 29 CFR 1910.1030 (g)(2)(ii). Physical Restraint. Required of at least one person per building (in which it may be used). Training frequency: Determined by entities providing training. Statutory Authority: Wis. Stat. sec. 118.305.

Medication Administration. A knowledge-based training program and skills check-off is required of all employees and volunteers assigned to give medications by certain routes: injected, inhaled (includes inhaler, nebulizer, intranasal); rectally administered; into a nasogastric tube; into a gastrostomy tube; into a jejunostomy tube. Training frequency: Annually for skills check-off related to specific routes; every four years for knowledge related to these routes. Statutory Authority: Wis. Stat. sec. 118.29. Safety Plan. Required of those the local school board determines. Training frequency: Determined by the local school board. Statutory Authority: Wis. Stat. sec. 118.07 (4)(c).

Student Records and Confidentiality. Required of all persons collecting or using personally identifiable information. Part 1 describes the categories of pupil records in Wis. Stat. sec. 118.125, 146.81 and Part 2 addresses the management of pupil records under Wis. Stats. sec. 118.125, 146.81-84 and 34 CFR § 300 and 34 CFR part 99, including access and disclosure, storage, retention, transfer, destruction, and annual notice.
